"In no country have I felt at home like in Colombia": Dominic Wolf

Dominic Wolf

He stirred controversy by wearing our national team’s jersey, but in reality, he drew attention to the love we should profess for our Beloved Land.

Dominic Wolf must be the most well-known German among Colombians today. Beyond being an ‘influencer,’ the truth is that this foreigner has shown the country why it’s special. He considers himself to have Colombian traits, despite his Russian ancestry and being born in Germany, a conviction that resonates with nationals and draws attention to the true love that binds us to this Beloved Land. That’s why we spoke with the most Colombian German.

Why is Colombia a Beloved Land?

A lot of it comes from the song ‘Colombia tierra querida,’ which I’ve always loved and that shows a lot of the country’s identity. It’s a beloved land because of its people; I’ve found that it has many nice and hospitable people, and it’s the people who make the country.

Do you consider yourself the most Colombian German?

Yes, so far I haven’t met another German or a foreigner as Colombian as me. What makes me so Colombian? I think it’s partly the traits, in the sense that my parents were born and raised in the former USSR, and I was born in Germany. I wasn’t as accepted and recognized; many times, they didn’t see me as a German but as a Russian, and in Russia, they saw me as a German. Honestly, in no country have I felt at home like in Colombia. Here, I feel like just another Colombian, and that made me identify a lot with the culture, understand the jokes, the humor, the accent, the habits. Many characteristics we Colombians have.

What places in Colombia do you love?

There are so many. Colombia is such a diverse country that it has everything. You start with the Andean region, which has so much to offer; the two coasts, the Amazon, the Plains. All that diversity is incredible.

If you were Colombian, what message would you have for your fellow countrymen?

I value the hospitality, everything that Colombia has to offer. It’s a very rich country with a lot of gastronomy and diversity. I highly value the people, how they treat you is something unique, not only towards foreigners but also among Colombians themselves. When you speak to Colombians abroad, they say that such treatment has no parallel. Colombians are very nice, they are very kind, something I haven’t felt in any other country, and coming from outside, I see that it’s an incredible country with a lot to offer, and one can be grateful to live here.
