Stopover Bogotá: Love at First Runway

Stopover Bogotá

Colombia’s capital launches South America’s first official stopover tourism program

Bogotá continues to position itself as a vibrant, diverse, and strategic city for international tourism. Starting July 2025, travelers in transit through El Dorado Airport can enjoy the new program Stopover Bogotá: Love at First Runway—a joint initiative by Avianca and the District Institute of Tourism (IDT) that turns 6- to 24-hour layovers into authentic travel experiences.

What is Stopover Bogotá?

The program allows any passenger with a connection in Bogotá to leave the airport and explore the city at no extra ticket cost.
The goal: turn a layover into a chance to fall in love with the capital.

With this, Bogotá becomes the first city in South America to offer an official stopover program, following in the footsteps of international hubs like Dubai, Lisbon, Amsterdam, and Doha.

A boost for international tourism

The initiative is expected to attract over 472,000 international visitors between July 2025 and December 2026.
It aims to generate approximately USD 40 million in tourism spending and USD 21 million in airport fees.

In its first phase, the campaign targets travelers connecting from seven key markets:

  • Lima
  • Madrid
  • Miami
  • Guayaquil
  • Mexico City
  • Buenos Aires
  • São Paulo

What can travelers do during their stopover?

Through the portal VisitBogota.co, users can book express tours or access exclusive discounts on:

  • Selected hotels
  • Restaurants and gastronomic experiences
  • City tours
  • Private transportation and guided activities

Featured experiences include:

  • “Bogotá in 24 hours” tour: Visit Monserrate, La Candelaria historic district, the Gold Museum, the Botero Museum, and shop at local markets.
  • Gastronomic routes through traditional markets like Paloquemao and La Perseverancia.
  • Nature excursions: hikes in the eastern hills, visits to the Botanical Garden and urban parks.

What should travelers know?

  • The stopover has no extra cost, but personal expenses (food, transport, accommodation) are covered by the traveler.
  • It’s recommended to carry essentials in hand luggage, as checked bags go directly to the final destination.
  • Return to the airport well in advance to meet transit, immigration, and security timelines.

Bogotá, a hub of experiences

This program is not just a travel innovation—it’s a strategy to position Bogotá as the gateway to Colombia.
The city offers history, culture, art, gastronomy, and unique landscapes—worthy of exploration, even for just a few hours.

It also supports key industries like hospitality, tourism transport, gastronomy, and local tour operators, boosting the economy and expanding the reach of urban tourism.
