Climbing: The Synchrony of Body and Mind

The enchantment of climbing, as described by Jonathan Lopez, a member of the Colombian Association of Climbing and Mountain Guides, is an indescribable experience.

In the realm of this progressive sport, there’s no need to fit a list of specific characteristics. According to Jonathan, who has dedicated 12 years to climbing and 8 years as a guide in Suesca, “Our only limitation is our mindset because, under the guidance of a certified instructor, you can climb efficiently and effectively.”

For Jota, as his friends affectionately call him, the journey begins with simple walls, building your confidence. As you progress, you engage the strength of your arms, abdomen, fingers, forearm, and specific muscles.

“You’re in constant competition with yourself”

Climbing, in Jota’s view, shapes you into a better person. It helps you understand your physical and mental capabilities, revealing your potential. “It’s about consistently surpassing yourself, striving daily to be better than you were yesterday. With acquired self-confidence, the practice becomes more manageable,” he assures.

“Fear never truly disappears, but you can learn to control it, understanding your body’s limits,” he says.

Ready to Climb?

Before you ascend, remember to adhere to safety instructions, stretch your entire body, dedicate a few minutes to breathing exercises, and study the route. Identify the types of holds, critical points, and potential resting spots.

Once you’re on your way, Jota recommends maintaining calm, deliberate movements, taking one step at a time, and ensuring you have three points of support on the wall before shifting your weight. Focus on your breathing and stay in tune with your body’s capabilities.

Don’t forget the essential equipment for safety and improved performance on the wall:

  • Harness: Provides support in case of a fall.
  • Helmet: Protects your head from potential impacts.
  • Climbing shoes: Specialized footwear with excellent grip for rock adherence, featuring a rubber sole with a thin toe for standing on small holds and a rounded heel.
  • Magnesium carbonate: Helps prevent hand sweating, enhancing grip and friction between your hand and the rock.
  • Rope, carabiners, and other specialized gear.

What to Avoid:

Hyperventilation due to fear, altitude, or lack of self-confidence can lead to quick fatigue and potential falls.

  • Getting tangled in the rope.
  • Overconfidence leads to neglecting helmet use.
  • Lack of communication with your climbing partner can result in accidents or incidents.
  • Rushing, which prevents you from finding the best footholds.

Food

Before climbing, Jota recommends eating to provide your body with the necessary energy. Allow at least 40 minutes of rest before starting your climb. During the climb, pack soft foods like peanuts, snacks, and cookies, along with ample hydration. Staying hydrated is crucial. Afterward, treat yourself to a well-deserved meal.

Clothing:

Opt for comfortable attire that allows for good leg mobility, such as sweatshirts and shorts. “The key is feeling comfortable and having the freedom to move,” he advises.

Suesca: An Ideal Climbing Destination

Suesca’s strategic location and proximity to the base of routes make it a perfect destination for climbers. The area offers routes suited for all skill levels, featuring varying heights, difficulty levels, and levels of exposure.

Suesca provides beginner-friendly routes for those seeking to learn and offers traditional climbing with mobile insurance to help you become a proficient climber. “They say that if you can learn to climb in Suesca, you can climb anywhere in the world. I think it’s true,” he says.

In the words of Jonathan López, “The best climber isn’t the one who climbs the most meters; it’s the one who finds joy in the activity and knows how to climb safely and effectively.”
