Alberto Linero“Santa Marta is Beauty and Pure Gratitude”: Alberto Linero

They say the best memories always stay with your soul, and for Father Lineros, Santa Marta is exactly that—a piece of his life he could never forget. This renowned Colombian priest, born and raised in the heart of Magdalena, carries his homeland in his heart and speaks of it with unwavering pride.

He was born in Santa Marta, the pearl of the Caribbean, home to the most beautiful bay in the Americas. Every street, every corner takes him back to his childhood in the El Olivo neighborhood. “That’s where I grew up, playing soccer in the streets, eating my tightly wrapped bollos, and living among people who love you sincerely, deeply,” he recalls with emotion.

For him, Santa Marta is more than just a place—it is a feeling. “The sun shines differently here, the sea has its own special taste, and the breeze carries a warmth that feels like home,” he says. And, of course, he cannot help but talk about food, because if there is one thing you enjoy in this city, it is eating. “Dishes like a good bowl of mote de guineo verde (smashed green plantain), a crispy carimañola (yuca fritter stuffed with meat or cheese) in the morning, a plate of shrimp rice, take me back to my childhood… Santa Marta tastes like heaven!”

But beyond its natural beauty, Santa Marta is also a cradle of talent, home to artists and athletes who have put its name on the map. “Carlos Vives never stops singing about his homeland—and once you’re here, you understand why. Every street has a story to tell. And what about ‘El Pibe’ Valderrama? He’s not just a soccer legend, he embodies who we are: talented, charismatic, full of life.”

For Father Lineros, being from Santa Marta is a badge of honor. And if there is one thing that fuels passion in this city, it is soccer. “Unión Magdalena is more than a team—it’s part of the city’s soul. The fans live it, breathe it, celebrate it, suffer it… here, soccer is pure emotion.”

Santa Marta is everything in one: sea, mountains, culture, history, and tradition. From the hills and scenic viewpoints to the dreamy beaches of Tayrona Park, this city has it all. And according to Lineros, visiting Santa Marta is a gift every Colombian should experience at least once in their lifetime.

“If you haven’t been here yet, you’re missing out on something truly special. Santa Marta is joy, flavor, and gratitude. Come and experience it—we’re waiting for you with open arms!”
