El Dorado Shines for Its Commitment to Sustainability

Bogotá’s El Dorado International Airport is home to more than 11,000 solar panels, helping to power its operations. The use of LED lighting technology also improves energy efficiency, reducing electricity consumption by 11.7%. Additionally, the airport works hand in hand with neighboring communities to minimize its environmental impact.

These initiatives have made sustainability a core pillar of El Dorado’s operations. As a result, the Airports Council International for Latin America and the Caribbean (ACI-LAC) recognized it as the first airport in the region to reach Level 4 ‘Transformation’ in ACI’s Airport Carbon Accreditation program.

El Dorado has participated in the program since 2017, achieving a 77% reduction in direct emissions. “It’s truly admirable and sets an inspiring precedent for airports across Latin America and the Caribbean. Its commitment demonstrates a clear determination to create a greener, more sustainable aviation sector,” said Rafael Echevarne, director general of ACI-LAC.

For Natalí Leal, general manager of Opain, “this recognition positions us as leaders in reducing the aviation sector’s carbon footprint. We will continue working collaboratively to further reduce direct emissions and advance our climate change strategy.”
