I Never Felt at Home in Any Country": Dominic Wolf
He sparked controversy by wearing the jersey of our national team, but in reality, he drew attention to the love we should feel for our beloved land.
Dominic Wolf is probably the most well-known German among Colombians today. Beyond being an influencer, he has shown the country why it is special. Despite his Russian ancestry and being born in Germany, he considers himself to have Colombian traits—something that deeply moves Colombians and highlights the true love that binds us to this cherished land. That’s why we spoke with the most Colombian German.
Why is Colombia a “Tierra Querida” (Beloved Land)?
It comes a lot from the song Colombia, Tierra Querida, which I have always loved and which truly represents the country. It is a beloved land because of its people. I have found that Colombians are incredibly kind and hospitable, and it is the people who make the country.
Do you consider yourself the most Colombian German?
Yes, so far, I haven’t met another German or foreigner who is as Colombian as I am. What makes me so Colombian? I think it has a lot to do with my background—my parents were born and raised in the former USSR, and I was born in Germany. I was not always fully accepted or recognized there; many people didn’t see me as German but as Russian, while in Russia, they saw me as German.
Honestly, I never felt at home in any country like I do in Colombia. Here, I feel like just another Colombian. That connection made me deeply identify with the culture, understand the jokes, the humor, the accent, and the customs—many characteristics that Colombians have.
What places in Colombia have captured your heart?
There are so many! Colombia is such a diverse country with everything you could ask for. You start with the Andean region, which has so much to offer; then you have both coasts, the Amazon, and Los Llanos. That incredible diversity is just amazing.
If you were Colombian, what would be your message to your fellow countrymen?
I truly value the hospitality, everything Colombia has to offer. It is a country rich in gastronomy and diversity. I deeply appreciate the people—how they treat you is something unique, not just toward foreigners but also among Colombians themselves.
When I talk to Colombians abroad, they always say that there is no treatment like the one they receive in their own country. Colombians are incredibly kind and warm, something I haven’t felt anywhere else. And as someone coming from the outside, I can clearly see that this is an amazing country with so much to offer, and people should be grateful to live here.
