Security in Hotels: A Comprehensive Commitment

Security in Hospitality: Lessons from Juan Manuel Rincón, Security Manager at Grand Hyatt Bogotá

With years of experience in various areas of security, I now have the privilege of overseeing physical security at the best hotel in Bogotá and one of the most prestigious in the country. Initially, it seemed that our main focus would be the protection of guests and employees. However, we have discovered that hotel security is a much broader and more dynamic concept, encompassing aspects far beyond the obvious. Here are some valuable lessons I have learned along the way.

Ongoing Training: The Key to Excellence

Daily training for our security personnel is essential. Our teams must be fully aware of the risks we face and be prepared to act quickly and effectively in any situation. Regular emergency drills help us assess the readiness and efficiency of our protocols, which are designed by our global security department and must be fully internalized by every team member.

Success in this endeavor relies on fostering a true culture of security. Every hotel employee, regardless of their role, must understand that security is everyone’s responsibility. Our motto, “Security is a shared commitment,” reflects this collective mindset and is ingrained in all of us. From receptionists to managers, everyone plays a key role in safeguarding our guests and facilities.

Beyond Physical Security: Workplace Safety and Prevention

In addition to general physical security risks, occupational health and safety is a critical priority. Each team member must be familiar with the hotel’s emergency plan, including emergency exits, assembly points, and the proper use of fire extinguishers, safety cabinets, and protective gear.

Technology and the Human Factor: A Powerful Balance

Hotel security has evolved significantly with technological advancements. Today, it is far more challenging for intruders to access guest rooms or steal valuables. This is largely thanks to electronic keycard locks, surveillance cameras, access control systems, and efficient radio communication networks. However, technology alone is not enough.

The human factor remains irreplaceable. Our security team is trained to detect suspicious behavior, prevent unauthorized access to restricted areas, and stay alert to potential threats. It is the combination of human vigilance and technological tools that allows us to maintain a secure and controlled environment.

A Preventive Mindset: Staying Ahead of Crime

Security personnel bear the greatest responsibility in handling any situation, which is why one of our main challenges is staying ahead of evolving criminal tactics. We continuously develop new strategies to identify, mitigate, and neutralize risks before they escalate.

Looking to the Future: Artificial Intelligence as an Ally

Finally, my advice is to always seek knowledge and stay open to new technologies. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging as a powerful tool that will revolutionize security management. AI will enable us to enhance surveillance systems, detect unusual behavior patterns, and improve our team’s response capabilities. Keeping up with technological advancements and integrating innovative solutions will be key to continuously strengthening our security protocols.
